One Year of Office Baby

Okay, more like six months worth, but I think it's the right time to share.

Mom resumed working out with a personal trainer a few months after Elora was born. For two hours on the occasional Monday afternoon, Elora would stay with me in my office.

This worked out well at first. Elora would usually sleep, or if not sleeping, could be convinced to sleep with some rocking in the carseat. Even better, anyone looking to argue with me could be immediately deterred with an exclamation of "Shhhh! The baaaaaby is sleeeeeping!" Later, sleep was more elusive, but with alertness came amusement, with our favorite past-time, tester-kicking.

Was Office Baby a good idea? Well, yes and no. Realistically, its two hours written off in the workday; I could occasionally get her to sleep while I worked, but not dependably. Once I gave up the idea of doing productive work, it was an enjoyable experience. We had some wonderful times at the office, and reactions from my coworkers to seeing the baby in the office varied from neutral to overjoyed.

At nine months, Office Baby is going on hiatus. In part because her newly discovered mobility and fascination with electronics has made it hard to protect computer off buttons. But mostly because a potential home relocation may change when and where Mom is working out. Still, I look forward to the debut of Office Kid in a few years.

Approximately three months in. This time I did not win the sleep battle, but she was happy being at the office with Daddy.

A week later, total victory. Two solid hours asleep in the office.

Four and a half months. Now holding toys!

Seven months, and already contributing to the team!
Later, sleep time requires extensive carseat rocking.

Seven and a half months. She is now capable of exploring the office; I've come up with a system of filing cabinets, chairs, and the carseat to limit Elora's access to the computers.

Eight months. She loves keyboards so much.

Nine months.

Nine Month Checkup

First doctor's visit not requiring shots (though one year they return with a vengeance). Still perfectly healthy, and trending well on all the key stats.

Weight: 17lb 12oz (25-50%)
Height: 27 3/4" (50-75%)
Head Circumference: 17 1/4" (25-50%)

Mastered:
Mobility! Elora is now indisputably fully mobile. Crawls from hands and knees with ease, sit and roll as desired, and can reach just about any destination she desires. She can also pull herself up to standing, and follow a surface while standing (commonly known as 'cruising'). Strangely, she can only cruise to the left, so when she runs out of surface to cruise, she has to drop back to crawling to return to the right side of the surface
Food! Still not a single teeth, but she'll eat anything, from Cheerios, to avocado, to banana, or even small pieces of meat. Purees and baby foods are for suckers when there's grilled cheese to be had.

Starting:
Standing. She can walk upright while supported, but has just started working on standing unassisted. She can stand for several seconds unsupported, and even got to a standing position on her own once.
Stairs. If there's a toy up a few stairs, she will climb them.

Elora now firmly embraces toys. Some of her favorites include the music play table, the bead necklace, and the kitty piano. However, she is keenly aware that the adults have the better toys, and will give up her meager possessions in an instant for a chance to get hold of any electronic device, from iPhones to TV remotes.

Cheerios are lame. Ribs are like pacifiers baked inside a meat cookie.

This toy box allows me to play at maximum efficiency.

Six months old!

(Warning: Post a tad redundant since Daddy got to it before me but oh well!)

Elora has turned six months old! She has hit a lot of milestones in the past month and it's very exciting. To start with, she had her six month check up with the pediatrician. Her current stats are:

Weight: 14 pounds, 10.5 ounces (25th%)
Length: 26 inches (50-75th%)
Head: 16.6 (25-50th%)

The doctor was very pleased with her overall condition. She got four shots and one oral vaccination. The appointment ran long and she fell asleep before the nurse could come in with the vaccines. She woke up briefly to shriek when she was poked but quickly fell back to sleep. Thankfully she had no adverse reactions to any of the vaccines. :)

In the last few days she has recently begun saying, "mama"! She says it deliberately now while looking at me, not just as a random noise. I'm so excited! We also caught her sitting up by herself from a flat on her tummy position. She's become very mobile. She's not crawling quite yet but she can roll across the room easily. She is also getting up on her knees and rocking and sitting up on her own with no support. She is very interested in playing with toys and other babies and really loves going to baby yoga.

We began Baby-led Weaning a few weeks ago and have been quite successful at it. She didn't show any real interest being fed with a spoon but she loves being able to pick up chunks of food and feed herself! So far she's eating everything from soft fruit and steamed veggies to potatoes in curry!

This is a very busy time developmentally for her and, as can be expected, her attitude has changed quite a bit. While she's still a very sweet, happy baby she has become much more prone to fussing. She wants to be held as much as possible and lasts much shorter periods of times in restaurants. She has no teeth yet but we're expecting some any time now. I love watching her grow but I'm starting to think this stage is harder on me then it is her! Thankfully most nights she sleeps in at least 8 hour stretches.

Six Month Checkup

Elora is 0.5 years old! As usual, we reward this milestone with a doctor's visit. A real marathon visit - an oral medicine and FOUR injections. Elora handled it with grace; a few mild cries, and immediately calm again!

Weight: 14lb 10.5oz (25-50%)
Height: 26" (50-75%)
Head Circumference: 16.6" (25-50%)

Weight is under the trend curve, but apparently this is quite common when babies first become mobile and start burning more calories.

Mastered:
Bedtime. Elora can put herself to sleep at night with minimal intervention, and sometimes even sleep through the night!
Rolling, not just to change position, but as a method of travel to reach a destination.
Grabbing items, and passing off from hand-to-hand.

Starting:
Rocking. Being able to get up onto one's knees and start rocking back and forth is a sure precursor to crawling.
Sitting up. Elora can, when pulled into a sitting position, can stay sitting while interacting with people or toys.

Feet are so four months. This is far more fun to get in my mouth.

Introducing Elora, Canadian

It is my pleasure to introduce Elora, now officially confirmed a Canadian citizen.

As my daughter, she was automatically a Canadian citizen at birth. However, being born outside the country, a citizenship certificate is the only formal proof that she is Canadian. Despite predictions of six months or longer, we received her certificate in approximately four months (three months from the date they acknowledged receipt of the application). The result is a decroative letter-sized certificate declaring Elora to be a citizen, effective the date of her birth.

Documenting Elora's citizenship was certainly not a necessity, but was an important emotional step for me (Dad). While I may not live in Canada right now, many of my family and friends still do. I still visit Canada regularly, and I have a great deal of pride in the country of my birth. I hope establishing Elora's citizenship will allow Elora to share that pride with me... and of course insist that she gets to take days off school during important hockey games.

I actually get asked a fair number of questions about this topic, so the rest of this post is dedicated to FAQs.

Q: Does the US even allow dual citizenship?
A: Yes, the US allows multiple citizenships, and allows citizens to hold multiple passports. Particularly in Elora's case (where no naturalization is involved), US law and policy is crystal clear.

Q: Will you be getting Elora's Canadian passport?
A: Not right away - her US passport is more than sufficient for travel (even to Canada). Infant passports in Canada are only valid for three years, and minor passports only for five, so that's a lot of renewals for a document she wouldn't really need to use. Once she is sixteen and eligible for (what will hopefully be) a ten year passport, it may be a more interesting discussion then.

Q: What about the recent changes to Canada citizenship law?
A: The changes are specific to second-generation inheritance; so it does not apply to Elora, but would impact her children.

Q: Is Elora eligible for UK citizenship as well?
A: No, similar to Canada's (recently changed) law, the UK limits second-generation inheritance of citizenship.

5 Months Old

How do you describe the incredible feeling of having a child to someone that doesn't have one? I ask that question because I am beginning to realize that as a new mother I still barely understand the answer. My life these past months has been a whirlwind of overwhelming feelings and experiences. Some of them have been frustrating and difficult but most have been full of wonder and joy. All of it has been hard...and tiring.

In November we took our first trip on a plane down to California to visit my family. It went very well and Elora barely fussed. We did learn pretty quickly that bringing the stroller and car seat is both a pain in the ass and surprisingly easy. This is because our stroller is entirely too large but the airport makes bringing it easier then you'd expect with free gate checking. We ended up purchasing a stroller 'frame' when we got home. This is a very light weight frame that our car seat securely snaps into. It weighs maybe five pounds and takes up much less space in the car.

During the trip many of my family members got to meet Elora for the first time; namely my mother, father, and siblings.

We risked the Donner Pass to visit my mother's family in Reno, Nevada and then had a lovely Thanksgiving with my father's family in Modesto. All in all it was a very good trip and I wish it would have been longer.

Mommy's little turkey!

Once we got back from our trip, we decided to start trying to sleep train. We came to this decision because Elora was spending most of the night in our bed and was waking up to eat every hour. I was getting very little sleep and it was starting to show. The first week of training was crippling for me. I was up almost all night and what little sleep I got was at odd angles in the chair in the nursery. Mike, I'm happy to report, slept very well. In about a week we went from her sleeping in a pack & play in our room or in our bed and waking up once an hour to eat, to sleeping in her own bed and eating twice a night. I still bring her into our bed for the last two hours or so of the morning but that's more for my benefit then hers. Also, we were able to adjust her bed time from trying to put her down at 10pm and then struggling with it until midnight or so to a consistent bed time routine of bottle-story-bed at 8:30. I'd say all in all it really helped us but I did learn an important lesson: I have to follow my own instincts as a mother. I'm not as comfortable as I thought I'd be with the cry-it-out techniques. It's painful to hear my baby cry and I really didn't see much of a benefit in letting her howl pathetically for hours like our pediatrician suggested. I am fine giving her a few minutes to try and settle herself but then I'll go and comfort her in some way. The hardest thing for her to learn was that comfort didn't necessarily mean eating. The books I've read and the advice I've gotten suggests that she should be able to sleep through the night without feeding at all but, honestly, I'm happy where we are now. The training was almost harder on me then it was her and I got to the point where I was getting severely exhausted and depressed. Maybe we'll try again in a few months when we've both had a chance to recover.

I've always love the holiday season but this year having her gives me even more of a reason to go all out. The adorable outfits and accessories are definitely more for my benefit then hers. That said, I think it is incredibly important to have these memories recorded to show her how important she is to us and what an integral part of our lives she was.

A few days ago a terrible tragedy occurred at an elementary school on the other side of the country from us. 20 innocent first graders were gunned down while attending school in Connecticut. I've found since I've had Elora that mortality has hit me harder. Even before this horrible event I was having anxiety attacks about even the idea of something bad happening to Elora. It's so terribly hard for me to even think of being without her now. I can not even imagine what the families of those children are going through and I hope I never do know. I feel so strongly for those poor people.

I love my life. I am not by nature a very religious person but I find myself praying every day that this will not end. That my child and my husband will not be taken from me. That I can have peace from this terrible anxiety that something bad might happen any day. As hard as these feelings are on my nerves I am learning to appreciate and enjoy every day I have.

Lord, please just let me see her grow.
